Wild Atlantic Way, Malin Head, Donegal

3 spots not to miss along the Wild Atlantic Way!

I may be biased but I believe Ireland has one of the best road trip routes in the world. From coastlines and castles to beaches and cliffs walks, and everything in between, the Wild Atlantic Way shows you everything Ireland has to offer. The route is fun to drive with breath taking scenery around every corner. Stretching from the tip of Donegal to the bottom of Cork, you will drive through a range of cities and towns and miles of diverse countryside with each bit offering something unique.  Here are just some of my favourite spots that you won't want to miss!

MALIN HEAD, DONEGAL

This is Irelands most northerly point, situated where the route begins (or ends depending on your start point). Malin head is located in the town of Ardmalin on the Inishowen peninsula in County Donegal.

Malin head is known for its breath-taking coastal scenery, birdlife, beautiful beaches and historic culture. The highest part in this part of the coast is Banba’s Crown. It holds an amazing view over the coast and the mountains of Inishowen Peninsula.

Starting from Banba’s Crown there is a hiking trail all the way to Malin Head. With mountain edges known as the ‘Devils Bridge’ and deep ravines known as ‘Hell’s hole’. I know these names may sound off putting but this trail is nothing short of incredible.

CLIFFS OF MOHER, CLARE

I don’t think a trip along the Wild Atlantic Way would be complete without a visit to the famous Cliffs of Moher. Located in County Clare, the Cliffs of Moher may not be the tallest cliffs in Ireland but they are certainly the most impressive.

The cliffs tower over the West Clare coast and are known for their panoramic views from the dramatic cliff edges. They ascend to over 700 feet and have become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland. This is no surprise as they hold some of the most breath-taking scenery in Ireland. There is a visitor experience along cliffs where you can explore the environmentally friendly Visitor Centre and 800 metres of protected cliff side pathways and viewing areas. The Cliffs of Moher are a must see on your travels along the Wild Atlantic Way.

OLD HEAD OF KINSALE, CORK

I’m finishing up with my all-time favourite place. The Old Head of Kinsale, County Cork. There are many things about The Old Head that make it so beautiful. It is one of Ireland’s most incredible coastal areas. This large promontory juts out into the Atlantic Ocean, rising hundreds of feet above the water with towering sea cliffs. These cliffs are the results of natural erosion that plunge directly into the ocean. The dramatic view of the Old Head lighthouse and golf course is the perfect place to end your Wild Atlantic Way trip.

I would give just one piece of advice when visiting this beautiful place, wrap up warm. No matter the weather, the wind that surrounds the Old Head would cut you in two!

Now I know I haven’t discussed everywhere along the route, and I know that each location along the Wild Atlantic Way deserves to be spoken about. However, don’t worry, I’ll be back to discuss more about Ireland’s famous road trip soon enough!
